Sound design assessment- Foley and ADR
Project type
Sound design
Date
December 2023
This was a marked assessment as part of my 'Storytelling with Sound' module on my Film Production course at University. For the assessment, we had to choose any 2 scenes from any films of our choice, and we had to re-create the entire Foley and sound-scape from a scene that ideally has a lot of layers of sound mixing present.
For my Foley, I decided to choose the endlessly disturbing sequence in Jordan Peele's 'Nope', where people are digested inside the stomach of Jean Jacket.
The sound design in the original scene is so expertly well done in it's own regard, but I wanted to take on this scene to add my own spin on it, and I'm incredibly happy with the results. I used a mix of practical (chicken thighs, balloons, cling film, celery sticks, and voices from my fellow course mates) and online sound library sounds using Pro Tools.
For my ADR, I choose the opening therapist scene from Ari Aster's 'Beau is Afraid'. This is one of my favourite films of this year so far, and I choose this scene specifically because how fascinating it is. The way that Beau's therapist talks to Beau in this scene lingers and hints towards what the film is about with it's themes of guilt, gaslighting and what it's like when you feel like when the world is out to get you. I recorded the lines with a couple of my friends on my film course, aiming to get the lip sync as perfect as possible using Pro Tools once again. I also added ambience and reverb as well to make it sound more natural.
I worked hard on this project and I achieved the highest grade of an A, so I'm proud of what I did here and I hope you appreciate the craft that went into it!
